Stolt Australia

Australian Workers Film Guide

Summary

Faced with jail time and hefty fines, in 2006 ten members of the crew of the Stolt Australia staged a sit-in at the port of Hobart, protesting plans to sack the crew and re-register the vessel in the Cayman Islands tax haven. Against the backdrop of the Howard Government’s industrial relations onslaught, the Maritime Union of Australia also faced fines that could put it out of existence. The film shows the crew and MUA officials staging the sit-in, as well as their success in bringing the company to the negotiating table with unions and the ACTU to reach a resolution – without fines, prison or the loss of wages.
